This class will cover the basics of your new sewing machine. We will also cover needle and thread basics.

This class is 2 sessions, held 1 week apart. You must attend Part 1 BEFORE Part 2. Even if you don't plan to incorporate hand quilting into your regular sewing practice it will open your eyes to see and feel the process that was used by our ancestors to make quilts. Recently, this technique (a rocking stitch in a flat frame) has been added to the Red List of Endangered Crafts by the Heritage Crafts Association. As this skill continues to drop out of circulation you will be doing a small part of keeping this skill alive just by having some knowledge of the history and process. While the thought of hand quilting is daunting to some, once the simple technique is mastered, it's quite relaxing, and when performed properly, is not taxing for most hands. In the class you will learn how the right tools (fabric, batting, needles, thread, thimbles and quilting hoops/frames) all contribute to small even stitches.

Cost: $ 75.00

Exploring Bojagi - with Dorothy Hayes
- Apr 18, 2026 10:00 am

Bojagi is a Korean piecing technique that has been used for centuries to make beautiful, practical, reversible cloth items. The traditional use for bojagi is as a wrapping cloth, but they are also uniquely beautiful when hung in a window or used as a tablecloth. Bojagi is pieced and finished, both front and back, as a single layer of cloth, with no quilting or binding needed, so Bojagi projects are finished more quickly than quilted items. Bojagi can be sewn either with a sewing machine (tongsol) or by hand (ssamsol). This class will utilize the machine technique, but the ssamsol hand method will also be introduced, and students will have an opportunity to try it, as well. Students may choose to sew the class project (see sample photo), which is a cloth that finishes at approximately 32” square. Alternatively, confident students may create their own improv piece, making up a design as they go along. This is meant to be a techniques class, and creativity is welcome!
